Large Tourism Development Potential on
Lake Nicaragua along the Granada water
corridor
A pristine 3,500 acre coastal property
located along the south easterly coastline of
Lake Nicaragua 40 minutes away by fast
boat from Granada, has potential as a
premier beach resort, sailing, fishing a prime
bass site, eco-tourism both on land and
water, significant housing development,
cattle ranching, cocoa production, a fifty
acre spawning estuary for fresh water fish.
Lake Nicaragua

Lake Nicaragua or Cocibolca is the 19th
largest freshwater lake in the world, just 268
square miles short of Puerto Rico`s area.
With an elevation of 32.7 meters (107 ft)
above sea level, the lake reaches a depth of
26 meters (85 ft). It is intermittently joined by
the Tipitapa River to Lake Managua.

The lake drains to the Caribbean Sea via
the San Juan River, historically making the
lakeside city of Granada , a prime tourist
town, an Atlantic port although it is closer to
the Pacific. The lake has a history of
Caribbean pirates who assaulted nearby
Granada on three occasions. The Pacific
Ocean is near enough to be seen from the
mountains of Ometepe (a two volcano
island on the lake). Lake Nicaragua, despite
being a freshwater lake, has tilapia, gaspar,
bass, sawfish, tarpon, and sharks,
synonymized with the widespread bull
shark.
Before construction of the Panama
Canal, a stagecoach line owned by
Cornelius Vanderbilt`s Accessory Transit
Company connected the lake with the
Pacific across the low hills of the narrow
Isthmus of Rivas. Plans were made to take
advantage of this route to build an
interoceanic canal, the Nicaragua Canal,
but the Canal was built instead.
On its west coast, in front of Zapatera
Island is San Jose de Mombacho, a 4,000
acre cattle ranch, which has the most
beautiful beach on the Lake. It is located
along the eastern side of Mombacho
volcano.

Mombacho Volcano
Located about 10 km south east from the
city of Granada, Nicaragua, the Mombacho
is one of the most famous volcanoes in all of
Nicaragua. The volcano is 1,344 meters
high, allowing a fantastic view on Lake
Nicaragua, if you are lucky and the top is
not covered in clouds. The Mombacho
Volcano Nature Reserve, home to over 700
different plants, is one of 78 protected areas
in Nicaragua
The Granada water tourist corridor follows
the south easterly coast line to the large
Island of Zapatera, seen below, 40 km by
boat from Granada. One weaves in and out
of 365 islands created by Mombacho many
centuries ago (1570). The prominent
geographical feature above is the towering
Mombacho.
Zapatera Island is 70 sq km, a site of
mysticism of the Chorotega Indians. It is the
second largest island in Lake Nicaragua,
and it too is an inactive volcano. It is a
national treasure, known as the home of
pre-Columbian statues and idols which were
found on the island during the Spanish
conquest, these are now exhibited in the
Convento San Francisco Museum.

San Jose de Mombacho
Looking down from Mombacho towards the
east is Zapatera Island. In front of the island
and below Mombacho Volcano here in this
picture is the 3,500 acre ranch - San Jose
de Mombacho (St. Joseph of Mombacho). It
is ideally suited as a prime water and echo-
tourist site, with hiking trails, lagoons,
howler monkeys, a 47 acre estuary stocked
with bass, tilapia, turtles, and prehistoric
gaspar fish -- a site where lake fish come
into spawn and resupply the lake.
There are seven kilometers of water front
which includes a 1.2 kilometer pristine
beach ideal for family usage. Climbing the
eastern side of the volcano are 700 acres
ideally suited for growing cacao, from which
chocolate is produced. There are about 300
acre forest preserve, horseback riding trails,
two lagoons, wildlife, springs. Currently,
there is a target of seeding 3,000 acres for
grass feed, supporting around 500 head of
cattle. This is a shot of some of these grass
lands looking north towards the volcano.
Milk, Milk is produced daily and which
supports the basic costs of the cattle
operation is picked up delivered to nearby
outlets along the Pan American highway, 22
kilometers west of the ranch on an all-
weather road. This photograph is taken
seven kilometers down the coast looking
back at the volcano.
The ranch offers multiple enterprise
options: as a water front echo-tourism
facility and hotels, boating, fishing,
swimming; then there are the bluffs along
the coast ideal for homes (here is a view of
the bluff overlooking the beach)
about 300 acres along the south eastern
part of the ranch could be designated for
either tilapia grow-out farming for export or
irrigated rice all with access to the water
table just below the land surface. Significant
wind power coming from north-eastern
winds and solar energy sources are
available for development and can
complement two-phase commercial energy
is available four kilometers on the western
entrance of the ranch.
Here are two videos taken from the bluff
overlooking the beach, lake, Zapatera, and
towards the south.
